Learning the Craft of the Scientist

What does a research career in science and engineering entail? What are the grand challenges? The Survival Skills for Scientists summer school attempts to answer some of these relevant questions, which are also discussed in the book, Survival Skills for Scientists, co-authored by Federico Rosei and Tudor Wyatt Johnston, professors and emeritus professor at the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre.

Alain Pignolet, Fiorenzo Vetrone and Federico Rosei, all three professors at the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre, will organize the 2013 edition of the summer school scheduled to take place April 24 and 25. This workshop is particularly suited to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

The Survival Skills for Scientists workshop will address key questions essential to the professional development of science and engineering students as well as tackle issues that are normally overlooked in a conventional university setting. Participants will have the opportunity to attend presentations by leading scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs on a wide range of topics and par-take in focused discussion groups moderated by eminent scholars.

These scientists, presenters and moderators, work in fields as diverse as nanotechnology, space exploration, biotechnology, the creation of high-tech start-ups and scientific communication. Throughout the course of the workshop, they will share their journeys, their path to success and how they survived in their chosen fields. They will also discuss their primary source of inspiration and future vision for the next generation of scientists and engineers. See all speakers.
